People often ask us about the source of our palm tree leaves. One commonly asked question is whether Egypt has enough palm trees
The answer is a definite YES. Egypt boasts a staggering 40 million palm trees, and we are able to gather over 250,000 leaves annually from our farms and trade partners located in Saqqara and different parts of Giza. By collecting these leaves, we divert them from ending up in landfills. This not only reduces waste disposal expenses for these areas but also supports our environmentally conscious initiative.
Where are the peacock products manufactured?
All our products are manufactured within our Microfactories situated in the Saqqara region. To determine the nearest Microfactory to you, you can refer to our Locations Map.
We have introduced the concept of Microfactories on a regional scale and plan to launch our franchise model in early 2024. Our aim is to establish local Microfactories that can efficiently cater to customers throughout Egypt, ensuring a streamlined process while maintaining our commitment to carbon negativity.
How do we treat the palm tree wood?
During our quality control process, we carefully inspect the palm tree wood and manually remove any elements that are not part of the wood. Next, we subject the wood to a disinfection process to eliminate any potential infestations. The wood then undergoes either a heat hydraulic pressing or a woodwork process, which serves as the foundation for all our products.
To enhance the durability and longevity of the palm leaves wood, we apply a coat of resin. Subsequently, the wood is subjected to drying and then transferred to our high-temperature hydraulic press. This combination of pressure and heat ensures that the wood is sterilized and free from any traces of contamination or bacteria, resulting in the formation of our tiles.
How should I care for my palm leaf products, specifically furniture?
To maintain the best condition of your furniture, it is advisable to place it in an environment with consistent room temperature to prevent rapid movement of the engineered wood-palm surface.
Please note that our items are not water-resistant. When cleaning, use a lightly damp cloth to wipe the surface. To ensure uniform drying, place a normal wood polish product vertically after cleaning. Avoid soaking the furniture in water.
To prevent the palm wood surface from drying out, you can apply a coating of food-safe mineral oil approximately every 3-4 weeks or as needed. Apply the oil in the direction of the grain using a clean, dry cloth.
Alternatively, you can use a natural method by rubbing the product with salt and half of a lemon. Allow it to sit for 3 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Use a dry towel to remove excess moisture.
When storing the furniture, choose a dry area away from extreme temperature and humidity changes.
In case of spilled water, it should be promptly wiped off.
For general cleaning, use a lightly damp cloth and avoid using cleaning chemicals as they may affect the natural finish. If there are stubborn stains, you can mix a few drops of lemon juice with lukewarm water and gently wipe the affected area with a soft cloth.
Once a year, or as needed, apply a coating of mineral oil to the surface in order to prevent drying. Rub the oil in the direction of the grain using a clean, dry cloth. Let it sit for 3 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Use a dry towel to remove any excess moisture.
We take great pride in minimizing waste in our manufacturing process.
For instance, any sawdust waste generated during production is recycled and utilized in complementary products until it is fully utilized. Additionally, we save and repurpose the manufacturing scraps, incorporating them into the creation of smaller products. By doing so, we ensure that our manufacturing waste is utilized efficiently, leaving very little waste behind.
Composting palm tree leaves is not the preferred option in terms of the Circular Economy concept.
In the Circular Economy, composting is considered the last resort for circular solutions. Typically, the recovery of energy or nutrients is the final step in the circular cycle. Conversely, we aim to take the palm tree leaves to the highest and most valuable level in the cascade. By utilizing the palm tree leaves in our products, we exponentially increase the value of the material. Using recycled materials is just as advantageous as creating products from virgin materials, but with the added benefit of being more environmentally friendly. Thus, we prioritize maximizing the value and potential of the palm tree leaves rather than resorting to composting as the primary solution.
What sets our material apart from traditional wood products is that it is made from a composite material created by pressing discarded palm leaf ribs together under high pressure. This innovative process breathes new life into a natural and under-utilized resource.
Our palm leaf wood exhibits many of the exceptional qualities found in virgin bamboo, known for its high performance. Moreover, our unique manufacturing method guarantees that our final products are not only durable but also long-lasting.
Palm tree leaves are the quickest-growing leaves, and each palm tree yields an average of 12 branches to trim annually. This makes the resource incredibly sustainable as a wood material.
